   Campaigners were celebrating today as the Court of Appeal handed down judgment finding the proposed Welsh badger cull to be unlawful on all three grounds they raised on appeal.

   Bovine tuberculosis in Wales has been declining without badgers being killed – including in Dyfed where badger culling is proposed. The Badger Trust emphasises this as the Court of Appeal gathers in Cardiff to consider the legality of the Welsh Assembly Government’s decision to kill badgers in its efforts to eradicate the disease.

   The Badger Trust is disappointed to see the reduction in the scope of field trials of the injectable vaccine for badgers against bovine tuberculosis, and emphasises that no one should leap to conclusions about the effectiveness or otherwise of vaccination in the light of this now truncated and consequently distorted project.

   The Lord Chief Justice has ordered that the Badger Trust’s appeal against the refusal of the High Court to grant a judicial review of the Welsh Assembly Government’s decision to kill badgers should be held in Cardiff on June 30th starting at 10.30am.

   Following a news item in the influential Farmers’ Weekly on June 4 the Badger Trust is writing to the magazine and to the National Beef Association for validation of a claim in a report that bovine TB was spreading in badgers at 10 miles a year.
